Chief Estimator

Purpose
Responsible for the management and processes of the Estimating Department including but not limited to developing, scheduling, and overseeing Estimating staff assignments and workflow.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Analyze drawings and specifications and assigns projects to estimating personnel based on complexity of proposal and schedule requirements.
  • Discuss and establish bid strategies, concerns and advantages for each project.
  • Maintain schedule of staff assignments and project due dates.
  • Manage the overflow of assignments and self performs estimates as needed.
  • Supervise estimating staff in development of material quantity and labor estimates based on standard historical performance data and current market rates.
  • Review estimates prepared by assigned staff members to ascertain that all areas have been accounted for prior to submitting estimate for review.
  • Solicit, qualify, and procure qualified subcontractors.
  • Research and recommend estimating tools and methods to improve overall accuracy, efficiency, productivity and quality of estimates generated by the Estimating Department.
  • Consult with clients, architects, vendors, Sales and Marketing staff during the bid and selling process.
  • Maintain the subcontractor database as needed.
  • Analyze completed projects to compare estimated costs to actual costs and determine the reason for any discrepancies.
  • Advise appropriate staff personnel as necessary to affect improvements in estimating and/or production.
  • Develop and maintain estimating procedures and methods.

Education and Experience
Minimum of 10 years construction experience or at least 8 years experience and a 4 year degree in construction related program. Proven field experience as a carpenter, superintendent and/or project manager preferred. Formal construction estimating experience mandatory. Prior supervisory/managerial level experience desirable. Knowledge of computer based estimating, word processing, spreadsheet, and/or presentation tools required. Experience with Timberline Estimating software a plus.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations
OSHA 10 hour Certification

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of all aspects of commercial construction to include but not limited to interior renovation, building additions, and new building construction. The ability to read blue prints essential.
  • Knowledge of industry standard unit pricing required.
  • Knowledge of earthwork, utilities and building infrastructure related trades and pricing required.
  • The ability to prepare conceptual estimates and budget pricing required.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills required.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills required.
  • Working knowledge of computer based estimating, scheduling, contract management, word processing and project management.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment on multiple projects.

Physical Demands
This position may require extensive walking at times as well as a generous amount of written and oral communications. The employee must be able to type efficiently on a computer keyboard in order to effectively collaborate with fellow employees as well as vendors and clients.

Working Conditions
Office Environment with routine construction project site visits as required.
